Basic Parameters
Chemical Name: Sodium Bicarbonate
Molecular Formula: NaHCO₃
English Name: Sodium Bicarbonate / Baking Soda
Common Names: Baking Soda, Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate
CAS No.: 144-55-8
EC No.: 205-633-8
HS Code: 2836300000
Appearance: White crystalline powder, odorless, slightly salty, and alkaline
Properties: Aqueous solutions are weakly alkaline. Sodium bicarbonate begins to decompose at approximately 50°C and rapidly releases CO₂ when reacting with acids. It tends to cake when exposed to moisture.
Food Grade Sodium Bicarbonate
Standard: GB 1886.214 — National Food Safety Standard for Food Additive Sodium Bicarbonate
Food-grade sodium bicarbonate is subject to strict limits on heavy metals, including lead, arsenic, and cadmium, as well as other potentially harmful impurities. It is suitable for food and feed-related applications when used in accordance with applicable regulations and standards.

Main Applications
1. Food Processing
Baking Leavening Agent
Widely used in bread, biscuits, cakes, pastries, fried dough sticks, fried dough twists, and other baked or fried foods. When heated or reacted with acids, sodium bicarbonate releases carbon dioxide, helping dough rise and improving texture. It is commonly combined with citric acid, monocalcium phosphate, and other acidulants to produce baking powder.
Flour and Dough Processing
Used in steamed buns, noodles, dumpling wrappers, and other flour-based products. It can neutralize lactic acid and other organic acids produced during fermentation, helping improve color and texture while reducing sourness.
Meat Processing
Used as a meat tenderizing and processing aid. It can improve water-holding capacity and help produce a more tender texture. Applications include meatballs, sausages, and other processed meat products.
Fruit & Vegetable Processing
Used in fruit and vegetable washing and processing, as well as in certain color-protection and pH-adjustment applications. It can also be used in specific produce-cleaning processes.
Beverage & Fermentation Industries
Used as an acidity and pH regulator in carbonated beverages and fermented drinks. It can also be used for pH adjustment in brewing and other fermentation processes.
Seasonings & Pickled Foods
Used in sauces, marinades, and pickled foods to regulate acidity and alkalinity.
2. Drinking Water & Water Treatment
Food-grade sodium bicarbonate for water treatment can be used in drinking water applications to adjust pH and alkalinity and help improve water quality.
Applications include:
Tap water treatment
Bottled water processing
pH adjustment
Alkalinity adjustment
3. Feed Additive
Dairy and Beef Cattle:
Used as a rumen buffer to help maintain an appropriate rumen pH, reduce the risk of acidosis, and support normal milk production.
Poultry:
Used to help birds cope with heat stress and support normal eggshell quality.
Aquaculture:
Used to help regulate acid-base balance and maintain appropriate buffering capacity in feed or water, depending on the application.
4. Household & Daily-Use Applications
Sodium bicarbonate can be used for:
Fruit and vegetable washing
Dishware cleaning
Refrigerator deodorizing
Household cleaning formulations
5. Pharmaceutical & Personal Care Raw Materials
Used as a raw material in:
Mouthwash and oral-care products
Personal care and cleansing products
Certain pharmaceutical formulations
Important: Food grade does not necessarily mean pharmaceutical grade. Food-grade sodium bicarbonate must not be directly used as a pharmaceutical product or medicinal treatment unless it meets the applicable pharmaceutical standards and requirements.
Industrial Grade Sodium Bicarbonate
Industrial-grade sodium bicarbonate is manufactured for industrial applications and does not meet food-grade hygiene requirements. Compared with food-grade products, industrial-grade sodium bicarbonate generally has less stringent impurity and heavy-metal specifications.
Strictly prohibited for human consumption and must not be used in food or feed applications.
Industrial-grade sodium bicarbonate is manufactured according to applicable industrial standards and may contain higher levels of impurities than food-grade products.

Main Applications
1. Flue Gas Treatment & Deacidification
One of the major applications of industrial-grade sodium bicarbonate.
Widely used for dry and semi-dry flue gas desulfurization and deacidification in:
Power plants
Industrial boilers
Waste incineration plants
Other industrial emission-control facilities
Fine sodium bicarbonate powder is injected into the flue gas, where it reacts with acidic pollutants such as:
Hydrogen chloride (HCl)
Sulfur dioxide (SO₂)
Hydrogen fluoride (HF)
The resulting solid residues are relatively easy to collect and handle, making sodium bicarbonate an effective reagent for dry flue gas deacidification.
2. Wastewater Treatment
Used as:
A neutralizing agent for acidic wastewater
A pH adjustment agent
An alkalinity source in certain biological wastewater treatment systems
3. Rubber & Plastics Industry
Used as a foaming agent or auxiliary processing material in:
Rubber foaming
PVC production
Artificial leather manufacturing
Other polymer processing applications
4. Detergent & Chemical Industries
Used as a raw material or auxiliary ingredient in:
Industrial detergents
Washing powders
Compound cleaning agents
Industrial degreasing formulations
It can also be used to neutralize acidic components and assist in industrial cleaning processes.
Important: Industrial-grade sodium bicarbonate must not be used for cleaning tableware, food-contact surfaces, or other applications involving food contact unless the finished formulation is specifically approved for such use.
5. Fire Protection
Used as a raw material for certain dry chemical fire extinguishing agents, including BC-type dry chemical fire extinguishing powder.
6. Textile & Dyeing Industry
Used as a buffering and pH-regulating agent during textile dyeing and processing to help maintain stable dye-bath conditions.
It can also be used during textile washing and neutralization processes.
7. Leather Industry
Used in leather tanning, processing, and neutralization processes to adjust and control the pH of leather materials.
8. Mineral Processing & Metallurgy
Used as a pH regulator in mineral flotation processes and as an auxiliary material in certain metallurgical applications.
9. Other Industrial Applications
Industrial-grade sodium bicarbonate can also be used for:
pH adjustment in electroplating solutions
Industrial pipeline cleaning
Construction material additives
Chemical processing
Other industrial neutralization applications
